Emergency Police Command Meeting Convened
Dedicated Investigation Team Formed, 86 Arrested Over Two Days
The police announced on the 19th that they plan to conduct detention investigations on all illegal actors involved in the attack on the Seoul Western District Court by supporters of President Yoon Seok-yeol.
At 9 a.m. that day, the National Police Agency held an "Emergency Police Command Meeting" chaired by Acting Commissioner Lee Ho-young to discuss measures against collective illegal violent protests.
The police stated, "We have formed a dedicated investigation team led by the head of the Seoul Police Investigation Department, and based on collected evidence, we will strictly respond to illegal actors, including detention investigations," adding, "We recognize the seriousness that such situations must never occur again and will actively respond."
The National Police Agency instructed metropolitan and provincial police agencies to strictly respond to illegal violent assemblies regardless of the group involved, in accordance with law and principles.
The police emphasized that while they will guarantee lawful assemblies and demonstrations to the fullest extent, they will strictly respond according to law and principles to violence and illegal acts that cannot be tolerated.
Previously, from the 18th when detention hearings began until the 19th when warrants were issued, a total of 86 people were arrested on the spot. On the 18th, 40 people were detained on charges including assaulting police officers, trespassing over the Western District Court fence, and attacking vehicles of the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO). On the 19th, immediately after warrants were issued, 46 people were arrested on the spot for breaking through police lines, trespassing over fences into the court, and damaging various property.
The National Police Agency designated one team from the Criminal Mobile Unit to analyze the evidence collected over the two days and identify additional participants. The police stated, "We plan to pursue additional illegal actors and those who instigated or aided them to the end."
