US on Yoon's Detention: "US Support is Firm... Reaffirming the US-ROK Joint Commitment"

"Confidence in the Resilience of South Korean Democracy"

The U.S. government stated, following the issuance of an arrest warrant for South Korean President Yoon Seok-yeol on charges of leading an insurrection related to the declaration of martial law, that "we reaffirm our shared commitment to the rule of law (between the U.S. and South Korea)."


On the 19th, the U.S. Department of State, in a response signed by a spokesperson to an email inquiry from Yonhap News regarding President Yoon's arrest, said, "The United States' support for the people of South Korea is steadfast," expressing this position.

It added, "We appreciate all efforts made by the Republic of Korea and its people to act in accordance with the constitution."


The State Department also stated, "The United States is committed to cooperating with Acting President Choi Sang-mok and the South Korean government," emphasizing, "We have confidence in South Korea and the resilience of its democracy."


In particular, it declared, "We reaffirm the enduring strength of the ROK-U.S. alliance and our commitment to South Korea's defense."
