Mother Dog and Two Puppies Being Cared for at Hospital
In Istanbul, Turkey, a mother dog made headlines after she carried her hypothermic puppy in her mouth to an animal hospital for treatment.
On the 17th (local time), foreign media such as the Daily Mail and AP reported that on the 13th, a stray mother dog carrying her puppy was caught on CCTV at an animal hospital in Beylikd?z?, Istanbul, Turkey. It was raining at the time, and the mother dog arrived at the animal hospital door, carrying her sick puppy in her mouth while getting wet in the rain.

The veterinarian who saw this initially thought the puppy was dead and quickly brought the puppy inside the hospital. The mother dog followed them inside. The puppy’s heart rate was dangerously low, and its condition was critical, so it immediately received intensive care. The veterinarians first administered an injection to the puppy and warmed its frozen body with the warm air from a hairdryer. The mother dog stayed around the treatment table while the veterinarian treated the puppy, occasionally watching over it.
Veterinarian Baturalf Doan said, "At first, I thought the puppy was dead because its body was as cold as ice, but upon closer inspection, its heart was faintly beating," adding, "This mother dog recently gave birth nearby, but most of the puppies had died."
Animal lovers had brought one surviving puppy to the hospital for treatment, unaware that another puppy was still with the mother dog. Veterinarian Doan explained that the mother dog’s behavior was special, saying, "Perhaps because local people had previously rescued the mother dog and her puppies and brought them to this hospital, she came to think of this hospital as a safe place."
Thanks to the dedication and efforts of the veterinarians, the puppy was successfully revived and reunited with its sibling who was already being cared for at the hospital. Now, the mother dog and her two puppies are staying together at the hospital. The hospital reported that since the mother dog’s milk supply was insufficient, they are providing additional food to the puppies, and their health is steadily improving.
Doan said, "The hospital staff were moved by the mother’s maternal instinct to save her puppies. The mother dog is very intelligent and thoughtful," adding, "We hope that once the puppies fully recover, they will find loving families through adoption." He also added, "The treatment for the puppies will continue for a while longer, and during this period, we are not accepting visitors to protect the puppies’ health."
