Yeoju City Supports Cataract Surgery Costs for Vulnerable Elderly... Preventing Progression to Blindness

Support for Eye Medical Expenses for Vulnerable Elderly in 2025
Eligible Recipients Include Basic Livelihood Beneficiaries Aged 60 and Older

The Yeoju City Public Health Center in Gyeonggi announced on the 18th that it is supporting the eye surgery costs for vulnerable elderly individuals at risk of vision loss, such as cataracts, in collaboration with the Korea Foundation for the Prevention of Blindness for elderly eye medical expenses in 2025.

The support targets include basic livelihood recipients, near-poverty groups, and single-parent families aged 60 or older who have been diagnosed by a specialist as requiring surgery for eye diseases such as cataracts, retinal diseases, or glaucoma. Medical expenses paid before the application date for eye surgery support are not eligible for assistance.

To apply, the applicant or a proxy must bring identification and a diagnosis (or medical opinion) to the health center, where the Foundation for the Prevention of Blindness will review and decide on eligibility and notify the applicant. Surgery must be performed within three months of notification, and the application must be submitted before the surgery to receive support.

For vulnerable individuals under 60 with eye diseases who wish to receive support for surgeries such as cataracts, glaucoma, or strabismus, direct application to the Korea Foundation for the Prevention of Blindness is possible.

A Yeoju City official stated, “We will do our best to improve the quality of life for the elderly in the era of healthy longevity by supporting medical expenses for eye disease management amid rapid aging and preventing the progression to blindness.”
