Choi Hojung, Chairperson of the Seoul Metropolitan Council, attended the ‘10th Seoul Student Human Rights Day Ceremony’ hosted by the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education on the 17th and promised, “I will work hard for the happiness of students.”

The ceremony, held to expand interest and participation in student human rights, was attended by many members of the Education Committee of the Seoul Metropolitan Council, including Park Sanghyuk, Chairperson of the Education Committee, and Hwang Cheolgyu, Vice Chairperson. Also present were Seong Heumje, Representative of the Democratic Party, and Kim Kyung, Chairperson of the Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee.

In his congratulatory speech, Chairperson Choi said, “The Seoul Metropolitan Council is more sincere about student human rights than anyone else,” adding, “Above all, the Seoul Metropolitan Council is not just shouting slogans but is working hard to ensure that students’ rights are guaranteed in school settings.”

In this regard, on the 8th, Chairperson Choi, along with Education Committee Chairperson Park Sanghyuk, inspected the school routes and classrooms of Hannam Elementary School, which experienced inconvenience during commuting due to protests around the presidential residence during the vacation period, and urged the establishment of safety measures. The council also produced and hung banners the very next day to guide the protection of children’s right to learn and the safety of school routes.

Chairperson Choi introduced, “The voice from the school field is to create a school culture of mutual respect that respects and considers others’ rights as much as one’s own rights,” and added, “In response, the Seoul Metropolitan Council enacted the ‘Ordinance on the Rights and Responsibilities of School Members,’ which goes a step further than the existing Student Human Rights Ordinance last year, striving to create an educational culture where the three main education stakeholders?students, teachers, and parents?can promote human rights in mutual respect.”

He also said, “We will carefully review the five major proposals, including school violence, suggested by the Student Participation Group today,” and “We will continue to do our best to create a Seoul where all education stakeholders are respected. Students are always welcome to knock on the door of the Seoul Metropolitan Council.”
