Following the UK and Korea, France Hosts AI Summit
Sam Altman, Demis Hassabis, and Other Key Figures Expected to Attend
Leaders and experts from around the world are gathering in Paris, France, to discuss the future of artificial intelligence (AI) and its use for the public good.
The French government will co-chair the 'AI Action Summit' with India on November 10-11 (local time) at the Grand Palais in Paris.
This is the third AI summit following the one held in London, UK, in November 2023 and in Korea last May.
About 1,000 participants, including heads of state, AI company leaders, and representatives from civil society organizations, will discuss concrete measures for the responsible development and use of AI technology.
Key industry figures attending include Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT; Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, a major competitor; and Arthur Mensch, co-founder of the French AI startup Mistral AI.
Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind and Nobel Chemistry Prize laureate last year, and Daron Acemoglu, professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Nobel Economics Prize laureate, are also expected to attend.
At the national and government leader level, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is co-chairing the summit, has confirmed his attendance.
Earlier, President Emmanuel Macron announced in November last year that he had invited then President-elect Donald Trump of the United States and Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and owner of the social network X (formerly Twitter), to the event, but their attendance has not yet been confirmed.
From Korea, Minister of Science and ICT Yoo Sang-im will participate.
In a prior press release, the French government explained, "AI has the potential to bring about a significant paradigm shift in our society," adding, "The core task of this discussion is to curb the inherent risks in developing such technology and to ensure that AI can fulfill its promise of progress and freedom within a framework of trust."
It further stated, "Building on the important milestones achieved at the UK and Korean summits, this meeting will focus on taking concrete measures to ensure that the global AI sector can deliver socially, economically, and environmentally beneficial outcomes for the public good."
At the summit, participants will discuss five key areas: ▲ Innovation and culture ▲ The future of jobs ▲ Building trust in AI ▲ Using AI for the public good ▲ Establishing global AI governance.
France is determined to showcase its leadership and investment attractiveness in the AI sector through hosting this summit.
The French government emphasized, "We will present a clear innovation roadmap focused on talent development, AI infrastructure, and the expansion of AI use and dissemination," adding, "We will demonstrate to international partners the validity and success of the European model."
