Songpa-gu Provides 50,000 Won Gift to 'Successful Quitters' of Smoking

Heo OO, an administrative officer in Songpa-gu, Seoul, decided to part ways with his 20-year smoking habit as the new year of Eulsa arrived.

Heo said, “To overcome the common failure of quitting smoking within three days, I visited the ‘Songpa-gu Smoking Cessation Clinic,’ which boasts a 40% success rate in quitting smoking.”

Songpa-gu (Mayor Seo Gang-seok) has actively supported residents determined to quit smoking in the new year through its Smoking Cessation Clinic.

The ‘Songpa-gu Smoking Cessation Clinic’ leads smoking cessation efforts with programs and one-on-one management by professional counselors, helping residents successfully quit smoking. Over the past year, a total of 2,568 people newly registered, and among them, 989 succeeded in quitting smoking, achieving a success rate of about 40%.

Operated by the Songpa-gu Public Health Center, the Smoking Cessation Clinic provides systematic support services including regular counseling, management, and education over six months. Participation is completely free of charge.

Upon registering at the clinic, individuals first undergo assessments such as nicotine dependence evaluation and smoking measurement by checking carbon monoxide levels in their breath to understand their personal smoking status.

After the test results are available, participants have one-on-one consultations with professional counselors to establish a quitting plan and receive behavioral therapy guidance.

Additionally, nicotine replacement aids such as nicotine patches, nicotine gum, and nicotine lozenges are provided to support effective smoking cessation. Those who succeed in quitting receive a commemorative gift worth 50,000 KRW.

The Songpa-gu Smoking Cessation Clinic is open to anyone wishing to quit smoking, regardless of age or gender, operating weekdays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. For residents who find weekday visits difficult, the clinic is also open on the second Saturday of every month from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Applications can be made by making a reservation in advance at the Songpa-gu Public Health Center Smoking Cessation Clinic.

In addition, the district creates a smoke-free environment through smoking guidance and enforcement in non-smoking areas, designation and management of smoke-free apartments, operation of mobile smoking cessation clinics, and various other support projects for smokers.

Seo Gang-seok, Mayor of Songpa-gu, said, “I hope all residents who have decided to quit smoking this year achieve their goals with the help of the Smoking Cessation Clinic,” and added, “We will continue to provide comprehensive health promotion services so that more residents can benefit and ensure that everyone in the district can enjoy a healthy life.”
