150 Billion KRW Investment, 450 Direct Hires
4,000-Pyeong Facility to Open in February This Year
Coupang Logistics Service (CLS) announced on the 17th that it will establish a sub-hub (an intermediate logistics facility that sends products from a logistics center to a delivery camp) in Jangseong-gun, Jeollanam-do to expand 'Rocket Delivery' in the Honam region.
On the same day, Coupang Logistics will sign an investment agreement for the establishment of the sub-hub with Jangseong-gun at the Jangseong-gun Office in the morning. The signing ceremony will be attended by Hong Yong-jun, CEO of CLS; Lee Gae-ho, Member of the National Assembly (Jeonnam Damyang-gun, Hampyeong-gun, Yeonggwang-gun, Jangseong-gun); and Kim Han-jong, Mayor of Jangseong-gun.
Coupang will invest 15 billion KRW to build the Jangseong sub-hub. It will be constructed in Yongheung-ri, Seosam-myeon, Jangseong-gun, with the goal of opening in February. The facility will have a total floor area of approximately 13,223 square meters (about 4,000 pyeong) and is expected to directly employ about 450 people.
The delivery area covered by the Jangseong sub-hub includes Gwangju Metropolitan City as well as Naju-si, Suncheon-si, Yeosu-si, Mokpo-si, and Muan-gun. Once operations begin next month, the Rocket Delivery coverage in the Jeonnam region will expand further, helping to alleviate the 'food desert' phenomenon in remote areas where it is difficult to obtain daily necessities and groceries. Furthermore, the investment is expected to contribute to revitalizing the local economy by expanding purchases of products from local small business owners and through open market entries, including new employment opportunities.
Coupang’s investment in the Jangseong sub-hub is a response to the rapidly increasing Rocket Delivery order volume in the Honam region. Coupang announced early last year that it plans to invest 3 trillion KRW by 2026 to build and operate nine logistics centers nationwide, including in provincial areas. Among them, the Gwangju Advanced Logistics Center began operations in October last year, leading to a rapid increase in Rocket Delivery orders from customers in the Gwangju and Jeonnam regions.
The sub-hub serves as an intermediate facility acting as a ‘mini logistics center’ connecting logistics centers and delivery camps, sharing the logistics volume of the logistics centers. The sub-hub in Jincheon-gun, Chungbuk, for which an investment agreement was signed in November last year, was also a follow-up investment decision made following the completion of the Namdaejeon logistics center.
Hong Yong-jun, CEO of CLS, said, “We are pleased that the expansion of Rocket Delivery is creating a virtuous cycle that leads to reinvestment in the region. We will spare no effort to revitalize the local economy through large-scale hiring of Jangseong residents.”
Lee Gae-ho, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea, said, “The Coupang Jangseong sub-hub is expected to provide jobs for local youth and greatly help the sales of agricultural and livestock products produced in the region. We will promptly consult with Jangseong-gun and spare no support.”
