The Russian Ministry of Defense announced on the 16th (local time) that it conducted airstrikes on Ukrainian energy facilities in response to Ukraine's attempted attack on the TurkStream gas pipeline facilities.
In a statement on the same day, the Russian Ministry of Defense explained that the collective attack by Russian forces using precision weapons on Ukraine's key gas infrastructure facilities the previous morning was retaliation for missile attacks on Russian territory and attempts to attack gas pipeline facilities.
The Russian Ministry of Defense pointed out that Ukraine attempted to attack the gas compression facilities in Krasnodar Krai using US-made ATACMS long-range missiles and UK-made Storm Shadow cruise missiles to disrupt gas supplies through TurkStream.
It added, "One of the targets successfully hit was the above-ground facility of the largest underground gas storage in Stryi, Lviv, Ukraine."
Russia claimed that on the 11th, there was an attempted attack by Ukraine on the TurkStream facilities, the last gas pipeline supplying gas to Europe.
On the 14th, Ukraine carried out its largest attack inside Russian territory, causing fires at various industrial facilities and gas storage tanks.
Subsequently, Russia conducted missile airstrikes on energy facilities in the western Ukrainian region of Lviv the previous day. Ukrainian authorities reported that there were no casualties from this attack, but power outages were implemented due to electricity shortages.
