Owner of Carrie’s Apartment in Manhattan’s West Village
Decides to Install Iron Gate on Building’s Stairs
Although it has been 20 years since its finale, the American drama 'Sex and the City' remains popular, and an iron gate is being installed at an apartment building in New York where the show was filmed. This is because tourists continue to cause disturbances by coming to this apartment, sitting on the stairs, and taking photos while imitating the main character Carrie.
On the 15th (local time), The New York Times (NYT) reported that an iron gate will be installed on the stairs of this apartment building located in the West Village of Manhattan, New York. Built in the iconic New York residential style known as 'Brownstone,' this apartment was used as the home of Carrie Bradshaw, the main character played by Sarah Jessica Parker in the drama.

Broadcast on the American HBO channel from 1998 to 2004, this drama is a romantic comedy depicting the work, love, and friendship of four women living in New York. The series ran for six seasons, and scenes featuring Carrie sitting on the apartment stairs talking with friends prominently showcased the building and its stairs.
Because of this, tourists have continued to visit the apartment to sit on the stairs or take photos just like Carrie, even more than 20 years after the series ended. The apartment owner installed a 'No Entry' sign on the stairs, but it was ineffective. Tourists still come at all hours, taking photos with flash late at night and filming videos, invading the privacy of the residents.
Eventually, the apartment owner, unable to tolerate the situation any longer, submitted an application to New York City to install an iron gate on the apartment stairs. Built in 1866, this apartment is located in Manhattan’s historic district, so any new installations require approval from New York City first. On the 14th, New York City approved the owner’s application, determining that the iron gate was necessary to protect the building.
The apartment owner told NYT, "It’s fine to take photos freely on the street, but you must not invade private space by coming up to the apartment or peeking through windows."
