"Average Wedding Cost for Newlyweds is 200 Million KRW... Retirement Funds Should Be at Least 1.9 Billion KRW"

According to the "Korea Financial Consumer Report 2025" released on the 15th by Hana Bank Hana Financial Research Institute, the average financial assets of financial consumers last year were recorded at 101.78 million KRW. This figure increased by more than 10 million KRW compared to 90.49 million KRW in 2023, marking the first time it entered the 100 million KRW range.

According to the report, 3 out of 10 unmarried people (32.7%) answered that they "have no intention to marry," which was more than those planning to marry (26.6%). Four out of 10 unmarried people (40.8%) said they had not decided whether to marry. Respondents who chose not to marry cited 'economic conditions' more often than values regarding marriage as their reason.

A survey on wedding funds was conducted targeting newlyweds who married within the last three years and those planning to marry, showing an average of 212.27 million KRW. In particular, newlyweds spent an average of 206.35 million KRW, while those currently preparing for marriage expected to spend 225.41 million KRW. This means that wedding costs increase by about 10 million KRW each year.

Newlyweds were found to prepare about 77% of their wedding funds on their own, and 6 out of 10 (58.8%) used loans to raise wedding funds. Among those who used loans, 4 out of 6 (38.5%) covered more than half of their wedding funds through borrowing.

In the case of married households, about 8 out of 10 households (77.0%) responded that they are preparing for retirement but feel it is insufficient. Only 10.6% answered that they are sufficiently prepared. The current average total assets of married households were 670 million KRW, and it is expected that they will secure about 920 million KRW by retirement. The average expected retirement funds of households that answered they would have sufficient retirement funds reached 1.86 billion KRW.

The Hana Financial Research Institute conducted an online survey of 5,000 financial consumers aged 20 to 64 last July and released this report.
