Specialized Wildfire Prevention and Suppression Personnel to Be Selected Earlier
Operations to Begin from the 22nd
Namyangju City, Gyeonggi Province (Mayor Joo Gwang-deok) announced on the 15th that it will establish a wildfire prevention headquarters (wildfire situation room) and enter an emergency duty system to fully focus on wildfire prevention and suppression during the spring wildfire caution period (January 24 to May 15).
The emergency duty will be operated targeting 16 eup, myeon, and dong districts, including the City Hall's Forest and Greenery Division.
Namyangju City will intensively operate a wildfire suppression helicopter (900ℓ Bambi bucket type, 700 million KRW) during spring and autumn for initial wildfire suppression, and plans to continuously maintain wildfire extinguishing facilities (remote water curtain system) within Mulmalgeum Arboretum (2 locations).
Additionally, the city will select about 100 specialized wildfire prevention and suppression personnel during spring and autumn and deploy them to nine major eup, myeon, and dong districts with abundant forests. Continuous suppression training and education will be conducted for them to strengthen initial response capabilities.
Due to prolonged dry periods caused by recent climate change, wildfires have occurred even outside the wildfire caution period. Therefore, the city plans to advance the selection of specialized wildfire prevention and suppression personnel, originally scheduled for deployment on the 1st of next month, and begin operations from the 22nd.
In particular, the city plans to ensure thorough wildfire situation response by operating an emergency standby team during the Lunar New Year holiday.
Furthermore, the city will build wildfire response center infrastructure, install unmanned wildfire surveillance cameras in major forest areas such as Yebongsan Mountain to strengthen prevention activities, and operate wildfire prevention broadcasting equipment and forest cleanup campaigns to raise citizens' awareness of wildfire prevention.
