2025 Major Business Plan
Busan Port Authority announced on the 15th its determination to achieve a container throughput of 25 million TEU and maintain its status as the world's second-largest global transshipment hub through efforts such as building a state-of-the-art smart port and digital transformation of port logistics in its 2025 business plan.
First, to achieve a container throughput of 25 million TEU, Busan Port Authority plans to further strengthen marketing with major global shipping companies such as MSC, and actively expand smart port infrastructure including the expansion of the country's first fully automated unmanned terminal (Seocon 2-5 phase), which opened in April last year, and the construction of Jinhae New Port.
In addition, efforts to improve the efficiency of port operation systems to enhance competitiveness as a global transshipment hub will continue.
Various support policies will be promoted for voluntary integration among operators of the newly developed port, which is fragmented into many small terminals, as well as improvements to the North Port traffic system due to the relocation of Gammam and Singammam terminals operated by the Jaseongdae wharf operator, and logistics flow improvements such as transporting transshipment cargo using internal terminal roads.
Furthermore, the establishment of a digital platform to improve the efficiency of transshipment cargo transportation will be actively pursued.
Real-time information-based transshipment monitoring system (Port-I) and terminal-to-terminal transshipment transportation system (TSS) will be applied, and an autonomous port logistics data distribution system will be established to revitalize port business. The port-type Hi-Pass E-slip, fully introduced last year as part of Busan Port’s digital transformation project, has surpassed 15,000 users.
Active responses will also be made to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to overcome the global climate crisis. New projects aimed at achieving carbon zero will be promoted, including the use of onshore power supply facilities (AMP) and continued support for slow-speed vessels, conversion of low-emission (LNG, DPF-equipped) yard tractors to zero-carbon (electric), and the construction of bunkering storage bases for eco-friendly ship fuels such as methanol, ammonia, and LNG.
The foothold for supporting domestic companies’ exports will continue to expand through operations such as the Netherlands cold chain logistics center, and marketing efforts will lead the way for Busan to become a global marine tourism hub by improving Yeongdo Cruise Terminal facilities, operating the largest number of cruise homeports in Korea, and attracting domestic and international tourists.
Efforts for social contribution will also be made to the fullest extent, including securing public content in the North Port redevelopment area to revitalize the local economy through the introduction of an anti-drone system to counter terrorism threats, support for safety facility installation to prevent major accidents, introduction of marine sports complexes, operation of marina commercial facilities, and support for youth and enterprise development to create new jobs.
BPA President Kang Jun-seok said, “Despite the uncertainties in domestic and international politics and economy, it is important to complete major projects without wavering,” and added, “We will do our best to enhance the competitiveness of Busan Port and contribute to the development of the local community through cooperation with various stakeholders including operators, shipping companies, and the port labor union.”
