Four regions in Gyeonggi-do, including Bucheon, Seongnam, Siheung, and Icheon, have passed the second phase review for the ‘Gyeonggi-type Science High School’.
The Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education announced on the 15th that all four regions selected in the first phase preliminary designation of science high schools passed the review by the ‘Gyeonggi-do Specialized Middle and Special Purpose High School Designation and Operation Committee’.
The new designation of science high schools proceeds in the order of preliminary designation selection, review by the Special Purpose High School Designation and Operation Committee, and request for consent from the Minister of Education. The Office of Education expects the final designation announcement to be made by the end of March.
Previously, in December last year, as a result of the first phase preliminary designation review for Gyeonggi-type science high schools, Bucheon High School and Bundang Jungang High School were selected for conversion designation, while Siheung and Icheon were selected for new establishment designation.
As a result of the committee’s review of the curriculum, budget, and school preparations in the four regions, Bucheon High School received high marks for its specialized curriculum in robotics and the presentation of concrete plans for school conversion. Bundang Jungang High School was highly rated for its specialized curriculum linked with IT-related institutions in the Pangyo area, as well as stable science high school conversion supported by local government budget and land provision.
Additionally, Siheung received positive evaluations for its specialized curriculum related to bio, stable school establishment supported by local government budget, and land provision. Icheon was also positively evaluated for its specialized curriculum related to semiconductors, local government budget support, and land provision.
Hong Jeong-pyo, Vice Superintendent of the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education and chairman of the committee, stated, "All four regions that submitted designation applications included detailed plans for operating specialized curricula and for school conversion or new establishment," adding, "The committee members who participated in the review judged that designation as science high schools is appropriate for all four regions."
