Namdong-gu, Incheon announced on the 15th that it has created a pedestrian-priority road in Guwol-dong's food alley, also known as 'Baendaengi Alley,' where pedestrians and vehicles are mixed, posing a high risk of traffic accidents.
The pedestrian-priority road is a side street less than 10 meters wide where pedestrians and vehicles share the space, but pedestrian safety and convenience are prioritized. Pedestrians can freely use the entire width of the road, while drivers must exercise caution such as driving slowly and stopping temporarily, with the vehicle speed limit reduced to 20 km/h.

The section in question is a side street approximately 290 meters long and 10 meters wide, densely surrounded by residences and restaurants, resulting in heavy traffic of both vehicles and pedestrians and a high risk of accidents. Accordingly, the district collected opinions from nearby merchants and proceeded with the project after undergoing traffic review procedures to establish the pedestrian-priority road.
Additionally, the existing asphalt pavement was covered with a patterned coating to enhance color saturation, and road markings and signs were installed to make it easy to recognize the pedestrian-priority road.
Park Jong-hyo, the district mayor, said, "The creation of pedestrian-priority roads will have a positive effect on reducing traffic accidents and revitalizing commercial areas," adding, "We will continue to promote improvement projects to create roads where pedestrians are prioritized over vehicles."
