During the education session, Min Seung-gyu, former director of the Rural Development Administration, gave a lecture on the vision of Pohang agriculture and the impact of AI technology on agriculture.
The New Year Practical Education for Farmers is an annual program aimed at disseminating new agricultural technologies, delivering agricultural policy measures, and enhancing farmers' ability to respond to field issues. It will be held nine times until the 23rd of next month at the Agricultural Education Welfare Center and township education centers.
This year’s practical education will provide customized technical training focused on high-quality agricultural production and climate change response for 1,250 local farmers.
The curriculum includes recent agricultural issues such as carbon reduction cultivation techniques, fire blight control in fruit trees, and subtropical crop cultivation techniques, aiming to address local agricultural challenges and promote sustainable agricultural development.
Education at the township level will focus on high-quality cultivation techniques by crop type, with customized technical training planned around major local crops such as mountain raspberries, chili peppers, apples, and rice.
Any aspiring farmer can participate, and for vulnerable groups such as elderly farmers who may find it difficult to travel and thus have low participation rates, the program will be held at nearby local venues with cooperative support.
Mayor Lee Kang-deok stated, “I hope the New Year Practical Education for Farmers has helped Pohang’s farmers plan their farming activities for the year. During these challenging times for rural areas, including abnormal weather and labor shortages, the city will strive to provide practical support to farmers through discovering alternative crops and increasing agricultural budgets.”
