Moon Sentenced for Selling Ketamine to Police Officer
The man in his 30s who sold drugs to a police officer who died after falling while attending a drug gathering, and the prosecution both appealed the first trial verdict.
According to the court on the 15th, Moon (36), who was indicted for violating the Narcotics Control Act, submitted an appeal to the Seoul Western District Court, which heard the case on the 10th. The prosecution also submitted an appeal to the court on the 14th, expressing dissatisfaction with the first trial verdict.
On the 8th, Judge Kang Young-gi of the Criminal Division 9 of the Seoul Western District Court sentenced Moon to 1 year and 6 months in prison, ordered him to complete a 40-hour drug addiction treatment program, and imposed a fine of 1.34 million won. Judge Kang stated, "Drug crimes cause great harm not only to individuals but also to society as a whole, so there is a strong need to eradicate them," and added, "Considering that he went beyond using and possessing drugs to selling them, the nature of the crime is serious."
Moon was indicted on charges of selling 3 grams of ketamine to Sergeant A, who was affiliated with the Gangwon Provincial Police Agency, for about 720,000 won in June 2023. In February of the same year, he was also charged with inhaling ketamine and ecstasy with two acquaintances. Sergeant A, who purchased and used the drugs, died from a fall on the morning of August 27, 2023, in an apartment in Yongsan-gu, Seoul.
The police found that about 20 people, including Sergeant A, held a drug gathering at the apartment in Yongsan-gu, Seoul, and that the attendees used various types of drugs, leading to an investigation. Lee (33) and Jung (47), who led this gathering, were each sentenced to 4 years and 6 months and 3 years and 6 months in prison by the Supreme Court last year.
