Red Road, a High-Traffic Area, to Be Operated as a "Scooter-Free Zone"
...Pilot Operation to Begin After Installation of Traffic Guidance Signs and Public Awareness Campaigns
Mapo-gu (Mayor Park Gang-su) will operate Red Road, a representative tourist attraction in Mapo-gu, as a "scooter-free zone."
Recently, with the rapid increase in the use of personal mobility devices such as electric scooters, problems such as speeding and illegal parking have continued, and cases threatening pedestrian safety by riding on sidewalks have increased.
In response, Mapo-gu requested Seoul Metropolitan Government last year to designate about 1.6 km of the Red Road sections R1 to R7 as a "scooter-free zone" to create a pedestrian-friendly environment by November 13, 2024.
Mapo-gu's request passed the traffic facility review by the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency on December 27 of last year.
Following the review results, Mapo-gu plans to coordinate schedules with related organizations to install traffic guidance signs and conduct active promotion and guidance measures to pilot operate the "scooter-free zone" in the first half of the year.
An official from the district said, "Red Road has a large floating population, and especially during Halloween and year-end holidays, it is a section crowded enough to require safety management," adding, "Due to increased concerns about safety accidents, the designation of a 'scooter-free zone' was absolutely necessary."
Along with the designation of Red Road as a "scooter-free zone," Mapo-gu plans to do its best to prevent accidents related to personal mobility devices through strong measures.
Park Gang-su, Mayor of Mapo-gu, said, "Red Road, where scooter traffic is restricted, will become a safer road centered on pedestrians," and added, "Mapo-gu will continue to strive to create a safe walking environment."
Meanwhile, Mapo-gu strengthened pedestrian safety by conducting on-site safety inspections on Red Road during Halloween and year-end holidays, when large crowds are expected, and promptly relocating personal mobility devices and shared electric bicycles that obstruct traffic.
