The Democratic Party of Korea has launched a new platform to receive reports of fake news, and in response, Yoon Sang-hyun, a member of the People Power Party, conducted a 'self-report' as a form of rebuttal.
According to the People Power Party's Media Special Committee on the 14th, Yoon accessed the Democratic Police Station website the day before and reported himself as a target of accusation. This is part of the People Power Party's campaign titled "Prosecute Me Too for Treason," protesting the Democratic Party's crackdown on fake news. Yoon said, "The Democratic Party's KakaoTalk censorship is a terrible dictatorship that censors the daily lives of the people," adding, "It is an act that suppresses the people's legitimate freedom of expression and will face strong public resistance."
He continued, "I have stepped forward as the first self-reporter to ensure that the people's legitimate protests are not blocked or distorted by the Democratic Party's oppressive measures," and urged, "I hope all concerned citizens will join until the Democratic Police Station server goes down." He also emphasized, "I will continue to represent the people's voices and take the lead in correcting the 'Lee Jae-myung dictatorship.'"
Earlier, on the 6th, the Democratic Party announced the launch of an online platform called 'Democratic Police Station' to receive reports of fake news. Jeon Yong-gi, who is leading this initiative, said, "Even ordinary people who simply share content will be firmly prosecuted for treason," adding, "We must prevent participation in acts of treason."
In response, the People Power Party criticized, "This is an attempt to control the thoughts and writings of citizens who oppose or question the Democratic Party's 'say anything and claim it later' unilateral assertions, going beyond 'censorship' to 'imprison' people within the Democratic Party's framework," and stated, "Prosecuting ordinary people who share such content is effectively a declaration of war against the people, restricting freedom of expression and thought, and implementing anti-democratic terror politics." Na Kyung-won also voiced on her social media, "Today, I have decided to become the 'No. 1 accused of treason,'" and declared, "Let's boldly shout, 'The impeachment is invalid. Prosecute me first for treason.'"
Cho Seung-rae, the Democratic Party's chief spokesperson, explained, "Looking at the mechanism by which fake news is created and spread, it is mainly distributed through social media," and said, "(The intent behind Representative Jeon's remarks) was to respond from the perspective that it is necessary to strictly deal with organized acts of spreading fake news." He added, "Fake news causes public division through false facts. Didn't President Yoon Seok-yeol repeatedly say that fake news must be dealt with firmly?" and concluded, "I hope the People Power Party does not pick unnecessary fights."
