The Japan Meteorological Agency announced that a magnitude 6.9 earthquake was observed at 9:19 PM on the 13th in Hyuganada, the sea area off the east of Miyazaki Prefecture in Kyushu, Japan.
The focal depth was 30 km.
NHK reported that immediately after this earthquake, the Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami advisory for Miyazaki Prefecture and Kochi Prefecture in Shikoku.
Due to this earthquake, a "seismic intensity of lower 5" shaking was also detected in the northern plain area of Miyazaki Prefecture.
The seismic intensity, a classification used by the Japan Meteorological Agency, is a relative concept that indicates the degree of shaking felt by people or objects around, unlike magnitude which represents the absolute strength of an earthquake.
It is expressed on a scale from 0 to 7, and a seismic intensity of lower 5 means most people feel fear and dishes on shelves or books fall. Shaking of seismic intensity 4 was also detected in Fukuoka Prefecture and Saga Prefecture.
Previously, in August last year, a magnitude 7.1 earthquake occurred in Miyazaki Prefecture.
