Gwangju Mayor Kang Gijung visited the National Assembly on the 13th, meeting with lawmakers from both ruling and opposition parties in succession, and requested, "Please actively work on enacting a special law for the thorough investigation and support for victims of the December 29 Jeju Air passenger plane disaster."
On this day, Mayor Kang met with Kwon Youngjin, chairman of the National Assembly's Jeju Air Passenger Plane Disaster Special Committee (People Power Party), Shin Jeonghun, chairman of the Public Administration and Security Committee (Democratic Party), and Kim Jaewon (Jouk Innovation Party), appealing for swift and substantial enactment of the "Special Act on Support for Victims of the Jeju Air Passenger Plane Disaster" and cooperation at the parliamentary level.
In response, Chairman Kwon Youngjin stated that the special committee would conduct a thorough investigation by combining on-site inspections and reports from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, and would strive to adequately reflect the opinions of bereaved families and Gwangju in the special law.
Chairman Shin Jeonghun also expressed gratitude and conveyed that the Public Administration and Security Committee would urge the passage of the special law on the Jeju Air passenger plane disaster.
Mayor Kang also met with Kim Jaewon, a member of the Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee and a singer (Lia), to discuss with the bereaved families the possibility of organizing a memorial music concert after the investigation.
The special law requested by the city includes economic and medical support for the daily recovery of bereaved families, creation of self-help spaces for psychological stability and healing for disaster victims including bereaved families, and support for the recovery of the local economy. It also provides support for minors who lost their guardians until adulthood and includes living assistance for victims such as bereaved families.
Along with this, it was deemed urgent to establish a healing space for victims in Gwangju, which is easily accessible to most bereaved families, and a request was made for national funding to establish the "1229 Mind Center" (tentative name).
Previously, on the 11th, Mayor Kang met with Gwangju lawmakers Yang Bunam, Ahn Dogeol, Cho Incheol, Jung Junho, Park Kyuntaek, and Min Hyungbae, reaching a consensus on the urgent need for the enactment of a "Special Act on Support for Victims of the Jeju Air Passenger Plane Disaster" to help all victims, from bereaved families to Gwangju citizens, recover from psychological and economic impacts, and agreed to join forces.
