Aide B Also Indicted Without Detention
The prosecution has indicted A, a former preliminary candidate in the Gyeongbuk Yeongcheon mayoral primary election, for illegally providing political funds to the shaman 'Geonjin Beopsa' Jeon Seong-bae (64).
On the 13th, the Seoul Southern District Prosecutors' Office Virtual Asset Crime Joint Investigation Team (Head Park Geon-wook) announced that A was indicted without detention at the end of last month on charges of violating the Political Funds Act.
A is accused of giving illegal political funds worth over 100 million won to Jeon in 2018 under the pretext of prayer fees while running as a preliminary candidate for the Liberty Korea Party (predecessor of the People Power Party) in the 7th nationwide simultaneous local elections for Gyeongbuk Yeongcheon mayor. The prosecution reportedly detected signs of fund transactions related to Jeon during the investigation of the fund flow of Queenbee Coin, known as 'Yonsama Coin.'
Additionally, the prosecution indicted B, known as an aide to A, without detention on charges of violating the Political Funds Act. B is accused of jointly collecting illegal funds to secure A’s nomination and delivering them to Jeon.
Meanwhile, the prosecution had previously indicted Jeon without detention on the 10th on charges of violating the Political Funds Act. Initially, the prosecution arrested Jeon on the 17th of last month and requested detention warrants twice, but the court dismissed both, stating that "it is difficult to recognize the necessity or substantiality of detention."
Regarding this, a prosecution official explained, "The statute of limitations for the charges is seven years," adding, "Due to the statute of limitations approaching, it was unavoidable to indict without detention." It is known that during the investigation, Jeon claimed that A returned the money after losing the Gyeongbuk Yeongcheon mayoral election.
