The city of Gwangyang, Jeollanam-do announced on the 13th that the city is bustling with energy due to the continuous visits of winter training teams.
Thanks to its mild climate with daytime temperatures remaining above freezing even in winter, well-established sports infrastructure, and proactive marketing strategies, 96 teams from five sports including track and field, soccer, table tennis, and swimming confirmed their visits to Gwangyang at the end of last year. This year, Gwangyang is making every effort in marketing with the goal of attracting around 100 teams and more than 1,500 people, which is a 15% increase compared to last year. Through hosting winter training camps, the city expects an economic ripple effect of 1.8 billion KRW for the local economy.
Park Sunok, head of the Sports Division, emphasized past achievements by saying, “Gwangyang has promoted the revitalization of the local economy by hosting national-level competitions such as the Baegun Cup National High School Soccer Tournament, the Gwangyangman Cup National Youth Swimming Competition, and the National Business Taekwondo Championship.”
She added, “We hope that attracting winter training teams will revive the stagnant local economy. Together with the Gwangyang Sports Council, we will do our utmost to support the training teams visiting Gwangyang so they can train freely without inconvenience.”
