According to Gyeonggi Province on the 13th, the Livestock Happiness Farm Certification Program is a farm animal welfare certification system introduced by Gyeonggi Province in 2018 as the first local government nationwide to establish safe livestock production, animal welfare, and a sustainable livestock industry harmonious with people, livestock, and the environment. So far, a total of 540 farms have been certified.
Eligible applicants are farms raising Hanwoo beef cattle, dairy cows, pigs, broilers, and free-range laying hens within Gyeonggi Province. Interested farms can apply through their respective city or county offices by Friday, February 7.
After document screening, farms operating with excellent rearing environments in terms of comfort and hygiene will be selected through on-site inspections. Certification is then granted after final review by a committee composed of livestock experts and consumer groups.
Certified farms receive various support and benefits to improve livestock rearing environments, including renovation of barns and quarantine facilities, improvement of landscape and feeding management, and establishment of quarantine management systems.
Shin Jong-kwang, Director of Livestock Policy at Gyeonggi Province, said, “Livestock Happiness Farms are not just about animal welfare but also enhance the quality of life for residents through eco-friendly livestock farming and healthy livestock production,” adding, “We will expand and develop the program to realize sustainable livestock farming and coexistence with residents.”
