HD Hyundai Heavy Industries announced on the 12th that it held the groundbreaking ceremony for the Peru naval vessel project on the 10th (local time) at the state-owned SIMA shipyard in Peru.

This event marked the joint groundbreaking ceremony for four vessels of three types (frigate, offshore patrol vessel, and landing ship) that HD Hyundai Heavy Industries is exporting to Peru. Starting with the Steel Cutting and Keel Laying ceremonies, the ships, which will become key strategic assets of the Peruvian Navy, have entered the construction phase.

Attending the groundbreaking ceremony were high-ranking Peruvian government officials including President Dina Boluarte, Prime Minister Gustavo Adriansen Ollaya, Minister of National Defense Walter Astudillo, Chief of Naval Staff Luis Jose Plar Figari, and Navy Chief of Staff Cesar Ernesto Collunje Pinto, along with Joo Won-ho, Head of the Special Ship Business at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries.

These vessels are scheduled to be delivered sequentially to the Peruvian Navy starting in 2026. They will be constructed locally utilizing the facilities of the SIMA shipyard, with HD Hyundai Heavy Industries providing advanced design technology and shipbuilding process expertise.

The ‘Peru Naval Vessel Project’ is a defense export contract worth approximately 640.6 billion KRW, secured by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries in April last year. This achievement, accomplished by government agencies and companies acting as ‘Team Korea,’ is regarded as a model case for the future overseas expansion of K-defense industries.

President Dina Boluarte of Peru stated, “This groundbreaking ceremony will be a very important milestone in the history of Peru’s shipbuilding industry,” adding, “We expect this project with HD Hyundai Heavy Industries to promote the modernization of the Peruvian Navy and contribute to national economic growth.”

Joo Won-ho, Head of the Special Ship Business at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, said at the ceremony, “This groundbreaking marks the beginning of K-ship entry into Latin America,” and added, “We will strive to successfully carry out this project based on our technological capabilities and trust, so that defense cooperation between the two countries can be further strengthened.”

As part of Korea-Peru defense cooperation, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries plans to support 12 technical personnel from the SIMA shipyard in Peru to participate in a two-week Naval Architecture Training Program at Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology starting on the 13th of this month. Additionally, the company intends to contribute to strengthening the competitiveness of the local shipbuilding industry by expanding cooperation with Peruvian equipment suppliers.

Meanwhile, based on advanced technology in the naval vessel sector, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries plans to realize its ‘Pan-Pacific Belt Vision’ by establishing overseas bases in regions such as Peru, the Philippines, Saudi Arabia, and the United States through partnerships at each overseas base, building local construction systems, and standardizing technology transfer packages.
