Ministry of Education: "We Appreciate the Decision and Will Continue Communication"

As the flagship national universities decided to freeze tuition fees for the 2025 academic year, the Ministry of Education expressed its welcome.


The Council of Presidents of National Flagship Universities (Gukchonghyeop) held a meeting on the morning of the 10th at Chungbuk National University, the association president university, and made this decision. The flagship national universities include nine schools: Chungbuk National University, Kangwon National University, Chungnam National University, Kyungpook National University, Pusan National University, Gyeongsang National University, Jeonnam National University, Jeonbuk National University, and Jeju National University. Separately, Seoul National University, which has frozen tuition fees since 2009, also decided to maintain this policy this year.

On the previous day, Oh Seok-hwan, Vice Minister of Education, held a video conference meeting with the Council of Presidents of National Flagship Universities and officially requested the freezing of tuition fees. Lee Ju-ho, Deputy Prime Minister for Social Affairs and Minister of Education, also responded to questions about tuition fees during a briefing that morning, saying, "We are requesting to maintain the tuition freeze policy," and added, "Especially for national universities, there are many areas where the government supports and cooperates, so we are emphasizing this particularly."


In response to the Council’s decision, the Ministry of Education issued a text notice that day stating, "We welcome the decision of the flagship national universities to freeze tuition fees," and added, "We appreciate the determination of the flagship national universities, who have set an example despite financial difficulties after deep consideration, and we will continue to communicate with universities to ensure that field-tailored administrative and financial policies take deeper root."
