Number of Suspects in Martial Law Investigation Rises to 50

The police investigating the December 3 emergency martial law incident have added Kim Juhyun, the Senior Secretary for Civil Affairs at the Presidential Office, who is accused of treason, as a suspect and have questioned him.

On the 10th, the National Investigation Headquarters' Special Investigation Unit for Emergency Martial Law (Special Unit) announced that they had registered Kim as a suspect on charges of treason and summoned him for questioning on the 8th as a suspect.


Kim is suspected of meeting with former Minister of the Interior and Safety Lee Sang-min at the Presidential Safe House (An-ga) on December 4 last year, the day after President Yoon Seok-yeol declared martial law, to review laws related to martial law. Kim, a former prosecutor who passed the 28th Judicial Examination in 1986, previously served as the 58th Deputy Minister of Justice and Deputy Commissioner of the Supreme Prosecutors' Office.


With Kim's registration as a suspect, the number of individuals under investigation by the Special Unit for the martial law incident has increased from 49 to 50. The 50 suspects include 26 government and ruling party officials, 19 military personnel, and 5 police officers.


The police are intensifying their investigation into the presidential office aides, including questioning National Security Office Director Shin Won-sik on the 7th. They are also coordinating the attendance schedule for Chief Presidential Secretary Jeong Jin-seok.
