Park Dae-sung, the 'random killer' who murdered a teenage female student he first saw on the street with a weapon, appealed the first trial verdict after being sentenced to life imprisonment.

On the morning of the 10th, Park Dae-sung submitted an appeal to the court through his legal representative.

The Criminal Division 1 of the Suncheon Branch of the Gwangju District Court (Chief Judge Kim Yong-gyu) sentenced Park Dae-sung to life imprisonment on the 9th in the first trial for charges of murder and attempted murder. Yonhap News

Earlier, the Criminal Division 1 of the Suncheon Branch of Gwangju District Court (Chief Judge Kim Yong-gyu) sentenced Park Dae-sung, who was indicted on charges of murder and attempted murder, to life imprisonment and ordered the attachment of an electronic monitoring device for 20 years during the first trial sentencing hearing the previous day.

The court stated, "The victim's fear and helplessness from being suddenly attacked are difficult to describe in words, and it seems that the bereaved family will find it very hard to heal the immense mental pain and wounds and return to daily life," adding, "The crime's consequences are severe, and the nature of the crime is extremely heinous as the perpetrator targeted a person with whom he had no relation for no reason."

It continued, "The incident caused shock, fear, and anxiety among members of our society that someone could be killed in the middle of the city for no reason, and yet the defendant showed no sincere remorse or reflection, even smiling when questioned by investigators."

Park Dae-sung was indicted on charges of stabbing an 18-year-old woman multiple times with a weapon without clear reason while she was walking in Jorye-dong, Suncheon-si, Jeollanam-do, around 12:44 a.m. on September 26 last year, resulting in her death. He is also accused of preparing for additional murders by visiting a bar and karaoke room operated by a female owner while carrying the weapon and without wearing shoes after the crime. Considering the brutality of the crime and the serious damage caused, the police disclosed Park Dae-sung's personal information and mugshot during the investigation stage.
