Gwangju Dong-gu (District Mayor Lim Taek) announced on the 10th that it will implement the "Onli Donggu Car" sharing service, which provides free rentals of government-owned vehicles that are not in use on weekends and public holidays.
This sharing service is available to households in the district who are socially disadvantaged (such as basic livelihood security recipients, lower-income groups, families with multiple children, multicultural families, and single-parent families). Residents who wish to use the service must apply in advance.
Any resident between the ages of 26 and 70 with a valid driver's license as of the date of use is eligible to use the service.
However, applicants must not have been convicted under Article 3, Paragraph 2 of the "Special Act on Traffic Accident Handling" in the past two years, and must be able to drive a standard vehicle without any special equipment.
Previously, Dong-gu enacted a related ordinance in December last year. To ensure that eligible users can utilize the vehicles for transportation or leisure activities safely, the district plans to provide a total of four vehicles: two passenger cars, one van, and one truck, and has expanded the scope of automobile insurance coverage.
The sharing service allows free use of vehicles in the order of application, but users are responsible for fuel costs, tolls, fines, and penalties incurred during use. In addition, users who violate the terms of use will be suspended for a certain period.
Lim Taek, Mayor of Dong-gu, said, "Since this service is operated by the local district office, we hope for a lot of interest and participation," adding, "We expect it will improve the convenience and quality of life for Dong-gu residents and contribute to revitalizing the sharing economy by utilizing idle resources."
