Upcycling Artworks from End-of-Life Boilers
Showcasing the Eco-Friendly Value of Condensing Boilers
Kyungdong Navien announced on the 10th that it will hold an exhibition titled "Once More Condensing: Rediscovery of Value" in collaboration with the Department of Metal Crafts at Kookmin University. The exhibition showcases various works that creatively reinvent parts and materials from end-of-life condensing boilers through the fresh perspectives of students. It will be held from today until the 19th at ‘Gallery Eun’ located in Insadong.
In September last year, Kyungdong Navien signed an industry-academia agreement with the Department of Metal Crafts at Kookmin University to promote the eco-friendly value of condensing boilers and held a contest for undergraduate and graduate students. Inspired by condensing boilers that recover and reuse heat discarded during the combustion process, the theme was ‘upcycling’?transforming discarded boilers into new works. A total of 20 teams submitted 41 works, and 11 teams were awarded.
The grand prize went to the ‘Upbo’ team, who created a chair from a boiler’s outer cover to express a ‘warm resting place.’ They were praised for best embodying the theme of ‘upcycling’ by recreating the warmth provided by condensing boilers into a chair for everyday relaxation. In particular, their work received high marks for implementing the most stable structure among the entries.
The excellence award was given to the ‘Indus Flame’ team, who made a gas stove using boiler parts such as the ‘burner’ and ‘wiring.’ Through storytelling that reignites the flame in an end-of-life boiler burner, they intuitively conveyed the values of condensing and upcycling. Their work was also well received for its practicality, as it can actually be used as a gas stove.
A Kyungdong Navien representative said, “With the students’ creative ideas, we were able to give new meaning to condensing boilers that are always part of our daily lives,” and added, “Kyungdong Navien will continue various campaigns to promote the eco-friendly value of condensing boilers.”
