20 Mapo-gu Rainwater Pump Station Employees Volunteer for Free Electrical Inspections in Vulnerable Households This Year
Visiting Homes of Elderly Living Alone and Severely Disabled to Repair and Replace Electrical, Gas, and Fire Safety Facilities
Last summer, while battling sudden heavy rains caused by abnormal weather, the rainwater pump station staff of Mapo-gu (Mayor Park Gang-su), who were responsible for safety, have now rolled up their sleeves to protect the safety of residents from the cold wave.
Mapo-gu’s ‘Winter Vulnerable Groups Electrical Facility Free Inspection’ is a project where technical public officials from the rainwater pump station use their expertise in electrical and mechanical fields during winter to assist vulnerable groups. This initiative started in 2002 and has continued for 23 years.
Until April, when the winter season ends, Mapo-gu will conduct inspections targeting a total of 1,517 locations, including elderly living alone, severely disabled persons, single-parent families, national and public daycare centers, and welfare facilities for the elderly and disabled within the district.
The 20 rainwater pump station staff are divided into four teams to inspect electrical, boiler, gas, and fire-fighting equipment.
Minor faults or fire and electric shock hazards are repaired immediately, and consumables such as lights and outlets are replaced promptly.
A rainwater pump station official said, “It was regrettable that some people had to live without repairs even for simple electrical facilities like fluorescent lights or outlets,” adding, “Seeing the satisfied expressions of residents after the repairs is very rewarding.”
Last winter, Mapo-gu also conducted free electrical facility inspections for a total of 1,739 vulnerable households and welfare facilities. As a result, 194 cases were handled, including replacement of electrical equipment such as fluorescent lights, switches, circuit breakers, and testing of circuit breaker operations.
Park Gang-su, Mayor of Mapo-gu, said, “During the cold winter, our staff’s warm talent donation will make the homes of neighbors in need warmer and safer,” and added, “I am truly proud to see the staff who have worked hard to prevent summer flood damage also volunteering for neighbors in winter.”
