"Rest Possible After Holiday Schedule"
"Increased Household Labor Burden on Married Women"
"Office Workers' Burden Should Also Be Considered"
Jung Won-oh, the mayor of Seongdong District, mentioned the government's policy on designating temporary holidays and predicted that taking a break on the 31st rather than the 27th would be better for the quality of life of the people and boosting domestic consumption.
On the 9th, Mayor Jung posted on his social media account, "The government announced that January 27 will be designated as a temporary holiday." He expressed regret, saying, "Above all, the sudden process of designation inevitably caused disruptions to various industries and their workers," and added, "I think there will be various interpretations regarding the background of the temporary holiday designation."
He continued, "Nevertheless, since the temporary holiday has been created, it is necessary to carefully select the date to better align with the original purpose of revitalizing the sluggish economy," and argued, "In that sense, I believe that designating January 31 as the temporary holiday would be more effective than January 27, which the government announced."
Mayor Jung explained the reason, saying, "After finishing the holiday schedule and resting through the weekend, the possibility of families dining out or going on short outings will increase accordingly," and added, "This aligns better with the government's intention to stimulate consumption and boost domestic demand." Furthermore, he said, "We should also consider that for many married women, designating the 27th as a temporary holiday could actually increase the burden of household chores during the holiday, and that office workers may face increased pressure due to various payments and deadlines concentrated on the 31st."
Earlier, on the 8th, the government and the People Power Party decided to designate the 27th, the day before the Lunar New Year holiday, as a temporary holiday. On that day, Kim Sang-hoon, the policy chief of the People Power Party, said in a briefing after the 'High-level Party-Government Meeting for Emergency Economic Stabilization,' "We expect significant positive effects such as revitalizing the domestic economy and promoting tourism." He added, "We believe this will expand opportunities for rest for the people and contribute to improving quality of life," and stated, "Additionally, we anticipate various effects such as traffic volume dispersion due to the extension of the holiday period." Accordingly, people will be able to take a continuous six-day break from the weekend of the 25th-26th through the Lunar New Year holiday from the 28th to the 30th.
