Leaked Photo, Jensen Huang Reverses Statement... "Samsung Memory Used in New Game GPU"

On the 6th, Micron Mentioned Memory Usage, Reversed Decision in Two Days
Industry: "Low GDDR7 Yield Means Nvidia Would Suffer if Using a Single Vendor"

Jensen Huang, CEO of NVIDIA, reversed his statement that the latest RTX 50 GPUs would use only GDDR memory from the American company Micron, revealing that Samsung Electronics' memory will also be used.

In a statement on the 8th (local time), CEO Huang mentioned, "The GeForce RTX 50 series will use high-speed GDDR7 memory manufactured by several partners, starting with Samsung."

This statement completely overturned the announcement made during the keynote speech at CES 2025, the world's largest electronics and IT exhibition, on the 6th, where it was stated that only memory from the American semiconductor company Micron would be used in the RTX 50 series. Huang's statement came after photos of the RTX 50 using Samsung's memory were leaked. Previously, there were reports that Samsung memory was used in the RTX 5090 GPU as well.

On the 7th, CEO Huang also caused some confusion regarding the memory used in the RTX 50 during a press conference. When asked, "Why didn't you use Samsung's graphics memory?" he responded by asking, "Do Samsung and SK Hynix produce graphics memory?" Upon confirmation, he said, "Please don't tell Samsung and SK."

The news that Samsung's memory was excluded even from NVIDIA's consumer graphics processing units (GPUs) could have contributed to a negative perception of Samsung's memory business, especially as it has not passed NVIDIA's HBM tests.

NVIDIA is the first to use GDDR7 in GPUs. GDDR7 is still in its early stages. Foreign media have pointed out that if NVIDIA sources GDDR7 from only one supplier, it could face difficulties related to yield and other issues. Therefore, a multi-sourcing strategy involving multiple companies is necessary. Although Huang confidently claimed to use Micron's memory, semiconductor industry analysts believe this would not have been the right choice for NVIDIA's interests.
