"Cutting off the lifeline," "I'll smash everything"
"Can such reviews be sued?"
Recently, a shocking restaurant review containing profanity and death threats was posted on a delivery app.
On the 6th, a post titled "This is truly an all-time crazy review" was uploaded on the self-employed community "Apeunikka Sajangida" (Because It Hurts, I'm a Boss). The author, Mr. A, wrote, "My mother and older brother run a delivery restaurant, and they sent me a photo of a review that was posted today," adding, "No matter how I think about it, this is severe. They said they would report it to the police during their break. Can such a review be subject to a lawsuit?" and shared a screenshot of the problematic review.
In the photo posted by Mr. A, a delivery app user, Mr. B, appeared to be dissatisfied with waiting 1 hour and 30 minutes to eat a rice bowl, saying, "If there are many deliveries, shouldn't you hire more delivery XX? You money-obsessed boss XX, the delivery XX are slow because you use old XX. XXX, should I just destroy the entire store?" He then unleashed abusive language. Furthermore, referring to a previous review comment, he issued a death threat, saying, "You should take it as advice, but I will cut your throat and throw you on the street."
Other self-employed individuals who saw the review expressed their anger. They responded with comments such as "Because of people like that, we can't even do business," "Definitely an all-time crazy person," "If you refuse the order, I think they will come looking for you," "I feel threatened and probably can't run the business," "This is a clear murder threat. Report it to the police immediately," "What exactly do they expect after ordering just one dish?" "They reorder multiple times and then act like this," and "Make a blacklist of customers," among other reactions.
Meanwhile, it was reported that Mr. B is a regular customer of this restaurant and has previously left dissatisfied reviews with one-star ratings. If a delivery app review contains profanity, abusive language, or contemptuous expressions, it can constitute the crime of insult under Article 311 of the Criminal Act and be subject to punishment. Those found guilty of insult may face imprisonment or detention for up to one year or a fine of up to 2 million won.
