Controversy Over 'Narak Quiz Show' at High School Festival
Surge in Complaints to Gyeonggi, Ulsan, and Gwangju Education Offices on the 8th
Controversy has arisen over some high school festivals adopting the format of 'Narak Quiz Show,' a content from the YouTube channel Pisik University. 'Narak Quiz Show' is a comedy content created by Pisik University on YouTube, conducted by asking participants difficult questions to answer. In particular, there are criticisms that it is inappropriate to hold such a program in an educational setting like schools.
According to the 'Big Data at a Glance' report by the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission on the 8th, as of 6:30 a.m. that day, complaints surged at the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education, Ulsan Metropolitan Office of Education, and Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education. In the case of the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education, typically 150 to 200 complaints are filed daily. However, 122 complaints were filed just during the morning hours on that day.
Similarly, the Ulsan Office of Education usually receives 1 to 5 complaints per day, but 54 new complaints were filed, and the Gwangju Office of Education also received 33 complaints compared to an average of about 10 daily complaints. The sudden influx of complaints to these education offices is due to the recent 'Narak Quiz Show' held at some high school festivals. Earlier, on the 7th, when content about the high school Narak Quiz Show was posted on social media, netizens pointed out that it was educationally inappropriate for students.
In particular, the problematic high school Narak Quiz Show questions included a question asking, "Choose the exercise you think is the most useless," with options such as "March 1st Movement," "Black Civil Rights Movement," "Feminism Movement," "Candlelight Protest Movement," and "Dongduk Women's University Engineering Opposition Protest Movement." Other high schools had similar questions like "Choose the movement you dislike the most," with options including "Korean Independence Movement," "Women's Rights Movement," "Democratization Movement," and "Student Rights Movement."
Netizens' reactions to the complaints were divided. Some commented, "Narak Quiz Show is a format where you get criticized no matter what choice you make, but the question itself was made in a mocking tone," "Should such vulgar hatred be called a show?" and "Is it right to hold such an event at school?" On the other hand, other netizens commented, "If there were correct answers, it wouldn't be Narak Quiz Show," "It's just a show made for laughs," and "Narak Quiz Show itself is content that asks sensitive questions and criticizes whatever you choose."
