Replacing with lightweight and safe desks and chairs, installing partitions around EM multifunction printers, improving educational facilities for safe use from toddlers to adults... Expanding family-participation environmental education programs such as 'Seongdong Climate Action School' and 'Saturday Family Environmental Education,' enhancing accessibility with Onmaeul experiential learning bus support
Seongdong-gu, Seoul (Mayor Jung Won-oh) announced that it has improved the facilities of the ‘Seongdong-gu Environmental Education Center’ to enhance residents' capacity to respond to the climate crisis in the era of carbon neutrality.
Located on the 2nd floor of the Yongdap-dong Saehalyong Plaza, the ‘Seongdong-gu Environmental Education Center’ was opened in 2017 as the ‘Eco-friendly Industry Experience Learning Center’ and was newly designated as the ‘Seongdong-gu Environmental Education Center’ in March 2024 to raise awareness of the climate crisis and expand resident-led carbon neutrality practices.
In December of last year, the education space, which had been mainly used by adults, was improved to allow families with students and children to use it comfortably. The existing desks and chairs made from recycled waste wood and waste drums were replaced with lighter and safer desks and chairs, and partitions were installed around the EM (Effective Microorganisms) multipurpose machine to further prevent safety accidents involving children. The district announced plans to continuously improve the facilities for user convenience.
Along with facility improvements, the district will also expand its educational programs. In cooperation with the nearby Sewer Science Museum and Saehalyong Plaza, the education programs, which had previously focused on resource circulation, will be expanded to cover various fields such as carbon neutrality, eco-friendly energy, and water circulation.
In particular, to increase accessibility to the Environmental Education Center, from February, the district will support the Onmaeul experiential learning bus and operate the ‘Seongdong Climate Action School’ for elementary and middle school students. On weekends, ‘Saturday Family Environmental Education’ will be conducted to operate the Environmental Education Center area as a low-carbon, eco-friendly experiential learning site.
Jung Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, said, “As a representative environmental education hub institution of Seongdong-gu, the ‘Environmental Education Center’ is expected to continue more active operations as a more comfortable and pleasant educational space through facility improvements.” He added, “We will continue to operate high-quality environmental education programs accessible to all ages and proactively promote carbon-neutral lifestyle practices.”
