[Tomorrow's Weather] Seoul Morning Feels Like -19°C... Strongest Cold Wave This Winter

Thursday the 9th will bring the strongest cold wave of this winter, with most regions staying below freezing all day.


Cold air below minus 30 degrees Celsius will flow in at an altitude of 5 km in the upper atmosphere, and a strong cold northwesterly wind will blow along the edge of the continental high pressure expanding from northern China, causing morning low temperatures to drop between minus 18 and minus 3 degrees Celsius.


The central region, eastern Jeonbuk, and northern inland Gyeongbuk will see morning temperatures around minus 15 degrees, while the rest of the southern regions are expected to drop to around minus 10 degrees.


In Seoul, the morning low temperature tomorrow will be minus 12 degrees Celsius, with a wind chill temperature dropping to minus 19 degrees. Other major cities’ expected low temperatures (wind chill) are Incheon minus 11 degrees (minus 20 degrees), Daejeon minus 9 degrees (minus 14 degrees), Gwangju minus 5 degrees (minus 8 degrees), Daegu minus 7 degrees (minus 13 degrees), Ulsan minus 6 degrees (minus 12 degrees), and Busan minus 4 degrees (minus 10 degrees).


The highest temperatures on the 9th will remain between minus 11 and 3 degrees Celsius. The central region will stay below minus 5 degrees even during the day, and the southern region’s daytime temperatures will be close to 0 degrees.

The expected highest temperatures (wind chill) in major cities are Seoul minus 7 degrees (minus 14 degrees), Incheon minus 7 degrees (minus 15 degrees), Daejeon minus 4 degrees (minus 10 degrees), Gwangju minus 2 degrees (minus 7 degrees), Daegu minus 3 degrees (minus 8 degrees), Ulsan minus 1 degree (minus 5 degrees), and Busan 1 degree (minus 3 degrees).


Temperatures will drop once more on the morning of the 10th. The morning low on the 10th is expected to be between minus 21 and minus 5 degrees Celsius. Afterwards, daytime temperatures on the 10th will rise to between minus 6 and 4 degrees Celsius.


Snow and rain will continue in Chungnam and Honam on the 9th. On the night transitioning from the 8th to the 9th, heavy snowfall of 3 to 5 cm per hour is expected in the Chungnam west coast, Daejeon, Sejong, southern inland Chungnam, inland Jeonbuk, Jeonbuk west coast, Gwangju, northern inland Jeonnam, and northern Jeonnam west coast.


In the Honam region, heavy snowfall of 3 to 5 cm per hour will continue until late afternoon or evening on the 9th, especially along the west coast where another heavy snowfall will occur between late dawn and morning on the 10th. On the 9th, snow or rain will also fall until morning and afternoon in southern western Gyeonggi, central southern inland Gyeongbuk, central and southern Chungbuk, and western inland Gyeongbuk, respectively.


From the 9th, swells will flow into the east coast, causing waves to crash over rocky shores, breakwaters, and coastal roads. Most seas are under storm warnings, with strong winds blowing at 30 to 65 km/h (9 to 19 m/s) and high waves ranging from 1.5 to 4.0 meters until the 10th.
