A bizarre incident occurred in India where a man cut off four of his fingers to resign from his company. On the 15th of last month, local media including the Hindustan Times reported on a man in Surat city, Gujarat state, India, who cut off his own fingers to quit his job. The man, who worked as a computer operator at a diamond company run by his relatives, was found on the street with four fingers of his left hand severed.

The man told the police, "I was riding a motorcycle to a friend's house when I felt dizzy and fainted," and "When I regained consciousness, my fingers were cut off." Investigating the case, the Indian police searched the area considering the possibility of involvement by criminal groups or cults. During the search, a bag containing a kitchen knife and severed fingers was found in a nearby river. The police, sensing something suspicious, later interrogated the man.

He then confessed that he wanted to quit working at his relative's company but lacked the courage to say so, so he cut off his own fingers. It was determined that he used a kitchen knife purchased from a nearby store to cut his fingers and tied a rope around his elbow to stop the bleeding. Netizens who came across the incident reacted with comments such as "Quitting a job is this scary," "Is the company a gangster group? You can enter freely but have to cut off your fingers to leave," and "It's absurd, but somehow understandable, so it makes me feel sad."

Meanwhile, in Japan, the number of office workers using resignation agency services that handle the resignation process on their behalf is increasing. Resignation agencies provide services such as submitting resignation letters to the company on behalf of clients, packing personal belongings, and returning company property. Currently, on SNS and Japanese internet communities, it is easy to find cases of people quitting using resignation agency services and promotional posts based on those experiences.

Some point out that the reasons office workers use resignation agency services include distrust in communication with the company, workplace bullying, sexual harassment, and prevention of secondary damage. The fee for using resignation agency services is 22,000 yen (about 200,000 KRW), and for part-time or hourly workers, it is 12,000 yen (about 110,000 KRW). An operator of a company providing related services stated in an interview with CNN that they received 11,000 inquiries in 2022 alone.
