On the 7th (local time), SK Hynix attracted the attention of visitors from around the world at CES 2025, the world's largest electronics and information technology (IT) exhibition held at the Las Vegas Convention Center in the United States, by unveiling the actual product of the 5th generation high-bandwidth memory (HBM), HBM3E 16-stack.
It has been three months since Kwak No-jeong, CEO of SK Hynix, officially announced the mass production of the product at the ‘SK AI Summit’ held at COEX in Seoul last November.
Considering that visitors may not be familiar with semiconductors, SK Hynix placed a model and video explaining the structure of HBM alongside the HBM3E 16-stack to aid understanding. The model, which visualizes the structure of HBM3E 16-stack made by stacking DRAM memory up to 16 layers, was designed so that the lights turn on sequentially from the 1st layer DRAM to the 16th layer DRAM. Above it, explanations about the manufacturing process of the HBM3E 16-stack product and the next generation HBM4 were added to emphasize that the company is continuously developing HBM.
The HBM3E 16-stack was placed at the center of the AI memory exhibition area in the SK Group pavilion. SK Hynix plans to provide samples of this product to customers this year and start receiving orders. Through this, they aim to solidify their leading position in HBM. According to SK Hynix, the HBM3E 16-stack product has an 18% improvement in learning performance and a 32% improvement in inference performance compared to the HBM3E 12-stack. It is also reported that the ‘Advanced MR-MUF’ process, which has already been verified for mass production in the 12-stack, was applied as is.

Attention is also focused on the reaction of Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia, the largest customer supplied with HBM by SK Hynix. CEO Huang is scheduled to meet SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won in Las Vegas. At a global press conference held at the Fontainebleau Hotel in Las Vegas on the same day, he said, "I think I will meet Chairman Chey tomorrow," adding, "I am very much looking forward to it." Chairman Chey and other SK Group executives are scheduled to tour the SK Group pavilion on the 9th.
