Highest Among Four-Year National Universities in Honam Region
Efforts to Strengthen High School-University Network Prove Effective
Suncheon National University (President Lee Byungwoon) announced on the 7th that the application period for the 2025 regular admission has closed with 1,108 applicants (based on the regular quota) for 192 available spots, resulting in a competition rate of 5.77 to 1.
This 5.77 to 1 competition rate marks the highest among all four-year national universities in the Honam region. Following the early admission, which closed with a remarkable 88.2% enrollment rate?an increase of 13.9 percentage points?this regular admission also drew significant attention and applications from prospective students.

By admission group, in Group A, the Department of Social Education recorded a competition rate of 10 to 1, and the Department of Computer Education had a rate of 9 to 1. In Group C, the Department of Pharmacy reached 41 to 1, the School of Architecture 8 to 1, and the School of Liberal Arts, which corresponds to the major-free selection unit, recorded 4.57 to 1.
Notably, this result represents the highest competition rate ever recorded by Suncheon National University since the regular admission system was fully introduced in 1996.
Despite the decreasing school-age population making it difficult for regional universities to secure new students, Suncheon National University has proven its competitiveness by being selected for the Glocal University 30 initiative in 2023, the University Admissions Support Project in 2024, and by earning a ‘top’ rating in the National University Development Project.
Furthermore, the university recently secured a government budget of 47 billion KRW?the largest ever?for the construction of the ‘Glocal Education and Culture Complex,’ further solidifying its status.
Most importantly, Suncheon National University became the first in the Gwangju-Jeonnam region to be selected for the Ministry of Education’s ‘Glocal University’ project, and from this year, it has been conducting integrated admissions centered on three specialized fields. In line with the purpose of introducing ‘major-free selection,’ which was a key topic in this year’s admissions, the university has strengthened applicants’ options.
Additionally, by being selected for the 2024 ‘University Admissions Support Project,’ the university has focused on designing and operating admissions processes to ease the burden on local students preparing for college. In fact, for the first time in this year’s regular admission, a regional talent selection was introduced, recording 13 applicants for 3 nursing spots (4.33:1) and 173 applicants for 6 pharmacy spots (28.83:1), among others.
Establishing an education cooperation system with the Jeonnam Provincial Office of Education and the Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education, and reorganizing and expanding the education cooperation office, also contributed to strengthening the high school-university network, which appears to have been effective.
It is analyzed that the close cooperation among high schools, education offices, and the university has supported the smooth implementation of the Autonomous Public High School 2.0 project, maximized local students’ satisfaction through regionally specialized curricula and customized career and academic guidance, and ultimately led to increased applications.
President Lee Byungwoon of Suncheon National University stated, “I am grateful that our efforts to break down the boundaries of university education through participation in the Glocal University 30, University Admissions Support, and RISE projects, as well as our consistent strengthening of student choice and industry-academia-government cooperation, have earned the trust of students and parents, resulting in such a high competition rate. Celebrating our 90th anniversary this year, Suncheon National University will continue to innovate and integrate, aiming to establish a medical school and expand domestic and international industry-academia-government campuses, striving to become a ‘super-glocal world-class regional hub university.’”
Meanwhile, Suncheon National University will announce the initial successful candidates for both Group A and Group C on February 7, with registration taking place from February 10 to 12. Additional successful candidates will be announced until February 19.
