Dongducheon Sangpae District to Launch 'Living Condition Improvement Project' Starting January

Gyeonggi Province will begin full-scale implementation of the project in January for the 'Sangpae District in Dongducheon City,' which was selected in this year's Urban Vulnerable Area Living Environment Improvement Project contest.

The Urban Vulnerable Area Living Environment Improvement Project has been underway since 2015 to secure a safe residential environment in urban areas with poor living conditions by promoting housing renovation, expansion of living infrastructure, and strengthening residents' capabilities.

The Sangpae District in Dongducheon City has been experiencing severe slumification due to rapid decline following the withdrawal of the U.S. military base and continuous population outflow. This project aims to improve the residential environment and revitalize the area.

The project will cover an area of 40,100 square meters around Sangpaero in Dongducheon City. The main initiatives include ▲creating a ‘Sturdy and Safe Shelter’ where residents can stay safely ▲organizing shared spaces for local residents ▲providing home repair support to enhance basic safety and living convenience of houses.

The project will be carried out through cooperation between Dongducheon City and Gyeonggi Province, with specific construction plans finalized after reflecting residents' opinions.

Through this project, the Sangpae District in Dongducheon City is expected to establish a safe and pleasant residential environment, improve residents' welfare, and provide an opportunity to breathe new life into the declining area.

Park Hyosik, head of the Housing Environment Maintenance Team at Gyeonggi Province, stated, "We hope this project will play a significant role in improving the quality of life for residents of the Sangpae District and restoring vitality to the local community. We will continue to discover new target areas to alleviate residents' hardships."
