Wind chill lowers perceived temperature... Nationwide morning -13 to 0°C, daytime -1 to 7°C
On Tuesday the 7th, a severe cold wave will hit as morning temperatures nationwide drop below freezing.
The cold northwesterly winds bringing the cold wave will also bring heavy snow to Chungnam and Honam regions.
The expected lowest morning temperatures on the 7th will range from minus 13 degrees Celsius to 0 degrees Celsius.
In the northern Gyeonggi area and the inland and mountainous regions of Gangwon, where a cold wave advisory has been issued, morning temperatures will drop by more than 10 degrees Celsius in one day, while other regions will see a sharp drop of about 5 to 10 degrees Celsius.
The highest daytime temperatures on the 7th are also expected to remain between minus 1 degree Celsius and 7 degrees Celsius above zero.
The expected lowest and highest temperatures in major cities are: Seoul minus 6 degrees and 1 degree above zero, Incheon minus 5 degrees and 1 degree above zero, Daejeon minus 5 degrees and 3 degrees above zero, Gwangju minus 2 degrees and 4 degrees above zero, Daegu minus 4 degrees and 5 degrees above zero, Ulsan minus 2 degrees and 5 degrees above zero, and Busan minus 1 degree and 7 degrees above zero.
In Seoul and Incheon, the perceived temperature will drop to as low as minus 11 degrees Celsius on the morning of the 7th.
In Daejeon and Ulsan, the perceived temperature is expected to fall to minus 8 degrees, in Daegu to minus 9 degrees, and in Busan to minus 7 degrees. Gwangju will have a perceived temperature of minus 2 degrees in the morning.
This cold spell is expected to last for quite some time. For the time being, morning temperatures will remain below minus 10 degrees Celsius (with some parts of the Gangwon mountainous region dropping below minus 15 degrees) mainly in central regions, eastern Jeonbuk, and northern inland Gyeongbuk, while daytime temperatures will rise only to around 0 degrees Celsius in these areas.
The cold northwesterly winds causing this cold wave bring cold and dry air that is relatively heavy and sinks downward. Due to this characteristic, strong gusts of wind around 55 km/h nationwide (70 km/h in mountainous areas) will blow for the time being, intensifying the cold.
Especially on the west coast of Chungnam, the Jeolla coast, and Jeju, where strong wind warnings have been issued, gusts will exceed 70 km/h (90 km/h in Jeju mountainous areas), making the winds even stronger.
From the early morning of the 7th, very strong winds similar to those on the Chungnam west coast will blow in Gangwon Yeongdong and the eastern coast of Gyeongsang. These two regions have been dry for a long time, making them highly susceptible to fires spreading rapidly, so extra caution is required.
The "peak of the cold" is expected to arrive on Thursday the 9th. Morning low temperatures on the 9th will range from minus 17 degrees to minus 3 degrees Celsius, and daytime highs will range from minus 8 degrees to 4 degrees above zero.
Afterwards, temperatures are expected to remain near or slightly below average until at least Thursday the 16th of next week.
The cold northwesterly winds will pass over the relatively warm West Sea, forming cloud bands that will be drawn inland, causing snow mainly in Chungnam and Honam starting from the 7th.
From the early morning of the 7th, snow and rain will begin on the western coasts of Jeonbuk, northern Jeonnam, and Jeju, spreading to the southern Chungnam west coast in the morning, the northern Chungnam west coast and the entire Honam region in the afternoon, and by night expanding to all of Chungnam, southwestern Gyeonggi, and inland western Gyeongnam.
On the 8th, precipitation will continue in Chungnam, Honam, inland western Gyeongnam, and Jeju, with snow expected briefly in central and southern Chungbuk, inland Gyeongbuk, and southwestern Gyeonggi in the early morning.
From the night of the 7th to the morning of the 8th, snow will fall at a rate of 1 to 3 cm per hour on the Chungnam west coast, Jeonbuk (west coast from the morning of the 7th), northern Jeonnam (west coast from the morning of the 7th), and Jeju (from the night of the 6th), with Jeonbuk expecting around 3 cm per hour.
Additionally, from the night of the 8th, "heavy snow" with rates of 3 to 5 cm per hour (around 3 cm in Chungnam) will fall in Chungnam, Honam, and Jeju.
The total expected snowfall over the two days of the 7th and 8th is 5 to 15 cm in Jeonbuk and Jeju mountainous areas (with up to 20 cm or more in the Jeonbuk west coast, southern Jeonbuk inland, and Jeju mountainous areas), 3 to 10 cm in Chungnam, Gwangju, and Jeonnam (with up to 15 cm or more in Gwangju and northern Jeonnam), 1 to 5 cm in Daejeon, Sejong, central and southern Chungbuk, inland western Gyeongnam, and mid-mountainous Jeju, and around 1 cm in southwestern Gyeonggi, the five western islands, Daegu, and inland Gyeongbuk.
Ulleungdo and Dokdo will also see heavy snowfall due to the cloud bands formed by the cold northwesterly winds caused by the temperature difference between the sea and the atmosphere, with expected snowfall of 10 to 30 cm by the 8th.
Heavy snow falling strongly may cause damage such as the collapse of facilities like vinyl greenhouses, so preparations are necessary. Visibility will be reduced during snowfall, and accumulated snow may freeze, creating icy roads that make driving difficult. There is also a risk of vehicles becoming stranded due to heavy snow accumulation.
Regarding the seas, storm warnings have been issued for the West Sea, the southern sea offshore, and the Jeju sea.
From the night of the 6th, strong winds with speeds of 30 to 60 km/h and high waves of 1.5 to 4.0 meters will gradually begin in the remaining seas. The waves in the outer central East Sea and the northern outer southern East Sea will exceed 5.0 meters on the 9th.
