'Yoon Impeachment Trial' First Hearing 8 Days Away... Constitutional Court Begins Full Operation with '8-Member Panel'

The Constitutional Court will begin full-scale trial preparations with an '8-justice panel' starting from the 6th, ahead of the first hearing date for the impeachment trial of President Yoon scheduled for the 14th. This is the first justices' meeting since Justices Jo Han-chang and Jeong Gye-seon were inaugurated on the 1st.

At this meeting, the justices are expected to discuss the recent decision by the National Assembly side to withdraw the charges related to violations of the Criminal Act, such as treason, which were included as grounds for impeachment, and to focus solely on constitutional violations related to the declaration of martial law.

Starting next week, the Constitutional Court plans to hold President Yoon's impeachment trial every Tuesday and Thursday, excluding holidays, and has already scheduled five hearing dates through the 4th of next month to accelerate the process.

There is also a possibility that President Yoon will attend the first hearing on the 14th in person. According to the Constitutional Court Act, the parties must be present at formal hearings. However, if he does not attend, there is a risk that the first hearing could be delayed. If he is absent again at the second hearing, the trial can proceed without the party. Regarding this, Yoon Gap-geun, the lawyer representing President Yoon, stated the day before, "The President plans to attend at an appropriate hearing date to express his opinions."
