Geumcheon-gu Installs 601 G-Valley Smart Streetlights... Saves 60,000 kWh Electricity Annually

Automatic Brightness Adjustment by Time Zone and Traffic Volume
Expected Annual Savings of 60,000 kWh Electricity and Reduction of 27.45 Tons of Carbon Emissions

Geumcheon-gu (Mayor Yu Seong-hoon) has completed the smart streetlight installation project on 601 streetlights installed on major roads within the Digital Industrial Complex (G-Valley) in Gasan-dong, Geumcheon-gu, Seoul.

The district promoted the project to reduce electricity bills and carbon emissions by introducing technology that lowers streetlight brightness during late-night hours, while enhancing residents' safety.

Smart streetlights adjust brightness according to time and traffic volume by adding sensors and controllers to existing streetlights. Reflecting economic efficiency, safety, and environmental considerations, the brightness is lowered during evening hours when traffic volume is low.

Currently, the brightness is maintained at 100% until midnight, then reduced to 75% until the lights are turned off.

This smart streetlight installation is expected to save approximately 61,971 kWh of electricity annually and reduce carbon emissions by 27.45 tons.

The project was promoted in cooperation with Geumcheon-gu and the Korea Industrial Complex Corporation, and is evaluated as a positive case of using land price difference recovery funds from land use changes within G-Valley for public benefit.

Yu Seong-hoon, Mayor of Geumcheon-gu, stated, “This smart streetlight installation is not only about saving energy but also a project that considers the safety of residents and road users together,” adding, “We will continue to promote various policies that provide practical benefits to residents.”
