The U.S. government has stated that it will continue to support the South Korean government and people amid South Korea's political turmoil and hopes that the situation will stabilize according to constitutional procedures.
John Kirby, White House National Security Communications Coordinator, said during a briefing on the 3rd (local time), "We expect the South Korean government, National Assembly, and people to work together to move forward steadily."
Coordinator Kirby stated, "We are committed to closely cooperating with the South Korean government, including Acting President Choi Seomok, to advance the shared values and common interests between our two countries. We note and appreciate Acting President Choi Seomok's focus on stabilizing state affairs."
He continued, "We also expect the South Korean government to proceed while adhering to the procedures stipulated in the South Korean constitution," adding, "We will keep communication channels open with the South Korean government at all levels."
Regarding the Biden administration's defense commitments, he emphasized, "Our commitment to the alliance is ironclad. We use this word often, but when it comes to South Korea, we mean it sincerely."
He reiterated, "We will continue to stand with South Korea and the South Korean people." He added, "We remain dedicated to maintaining peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula, and we are committed to ensuring that the mutual defense posture of both countries is prepared and firmly maintained to respond to any external provocations or threats."
