Police Investigate 86 Malicious Posts on Jeju Air Disaster... "Posters Identified and Arrested"

The police announced on the 4th that they are investigating 86 malicious posts involving defamation and insults against the victims and bereaved families of the Jeju Air passenger plane disaster.

The National Investigation Headquarters of the National Police Agency stated, "We are conducting investigations on 86 cases," adding, "We have executed five search warrants to identify the posters and are awaiting issuance for 44 more cases." They further explained, "For the remaining 37 cases, we are in consultation with the prosecution and community operators regarding methods to secure investigation materials."


The police are investigating the identity of posters related to a YouTube channel that posted false videos claiming that a firefighter died during rescue operations, as well as insults directed at bereaved family members who are preparing for national exams within a medical professional-only community.


A police official said, "We have received a complaint from a representative group of bereaved families urging strict punishment for malicious posts targeting victims and their families," adding, "We are thoroughly reviewing all reports and tips received both at the on-site reporting center established at Muan Airport and online. We will promptly identify and apprehend the posters in cooperation with the bereaved families and relevant authorities and ensure strict judicial action."
