User Count Reaches Record High of 9.75 Million
The number of domestic Netflix application (app) users in South Korea has reached an all-time high of 9.75 million. This is attributed to the release of Netflix's globally popular original series, "Ojingeo Game 2" (Squid Game 2), which premiered last week.
On the 3rd, Yonhap News cited data from WiseApp, Retail, and Goods, app and retail analysis services that surveyed Korean smartphone users (Android + iOS). The 9.75 million users represent an increase of 1.87 million compared to the third week of last month (7.88 million), before the release of "Ojingeo Game 2."
"Ojingeo Game 2" is a series depicting the intense battle between Gi-hun (played by Lee Jung-jae), who returns determined for revenge and participates in the game again, and the Front Man (played by Lee Byung-hun) who welcomes him, along with the real game that begins anew. It ranked number one worldwide in the TV program category just one day after its release on November 26. The original "Ojingeo Game," released in 2021, set a record with a cumulative viewing time of 2.2 billion hours.
Similar results were found in the monthly active user (MAU) count of apps by mobile index company IGAWorks. Netflix recorded 12.99 million users, surpassing last month's 11.6 million. Following were TVING with 7.25 million, Coupang Play with 7.09 million, Wavve with 4.37 million, Disney+ with 2.93 million, and Watcha with 520,000 users.
Content demand measurement company Parrot Analytics forecasted that the "Ojingeo Game" series will generate cumulative revenue exceeding $2 billion USD (approximately 2.94 trillion KRW) by 2027 through additional seasons.
Currently, "Ojingeo Game 2" is setting various records and attracting global attention. According to Netflix's official site "Netflix Top 10," the viewing hours for the original series "Ojingeo Game 2" during the fourth week of December (23?29) totaled 487.6 million hours. This surpassed the 448.73 million hours set by the original "Ojingeo Game 1" in its first week. Within two days of release, it achieved the number one TV show rating in 92 countries and scored a perfect 930 points as number one in 93 countries according to FlixPatrol rankings.
