On the morning of the 3rd, President Yoon Seok-yeol submitted his first presidential opinion statement regarding the impeachment trial to the Constitutional Court. The Constitutional Court plans to hold a meeting of the eight-member panel of constitutional justices, including newly appointed Justices Jo Han-chang and Jeong Gye-seon, starting Monday the 6th.
On the 3rd, Cheon Jae-hyun, the Constitutional Court spokesperson, stated at a press briefing, "We will convene a justices' meeting on the 6th to share the situation among the full bench and resolve the vacancies."
The previous afternoon, the prosecution committee of the National Assembly submitted evidence related to President Yoon's impeachment trial. The president's side also submitted additional power of attorney and a written response that morning. It has been 20 days since the impeachment was passed on the 14th of last month, and 14 days since the Constitutional Court was deemed to have delivered the notification of acceptance of the impeachment trial to President Yoon on December 20th of last year. The specific contents of the response are expected to be disclosed at the second preparatory hearing scheduled for the afternoon.
Regarding the High-ranking Officials' Crime Investigation Unit's attempt to execute an arrest warrant for President Yoon, Spokesperson Cheon said, "There is no official position," and added, "There is no plan to change the hearing schedule." When asked about the president's side reportedly planning to file a recusation request against Justices Jo Han-chang and Jeong Gye-seon, he said, "There is a regulation for recusation requests," and "Whether it is accepted is a matter for the justices to decide."
