Nowon-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Oh Seung-rok) announced that it will operate the "Grow Tall! Flatten Your Belly!" program to help children develop healthily and form proper eating habits during the winter vacation.
The "Grow Tall! Flatten Your Belly!" program is an integrated health promotion program combining physical activity and nutrition education, designed to address the lack of physical activity among children during the winter vacation and to establish balanced eating habits.
Since December 9, the district has recruited 40 elementary school students in grades 4 to 6 residing in Nowon-gu on a first-come, first-served basis, and the program will be conducted for these participants.
The program runs from January 6 to January 24, 2025, held three times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, for a total of nine sessions.
Participating children will undergo pre-assessments including body composition (height, skeletal muscle mass, body fat percentage) and health behavior surveys. Afterwards, they will experience creative and enjoyable physical activities through new sports such as Kin-Ball and basic fitness strengthening exercises to build their physical strength.
Additionally, nutritionists from the public health center will provide nutrition-related missions and customized nutrition education to guide children in forming proper eating habits in their daily lives.
The program consists of various activities that stimulate children's interest and promote physical health, starting with an inauguration ceremony and program briefing, followed by games such as tag, plate cone running, new sports (Kin-Ball) games, ladder jumps, and nutrition education.
After completing the nine sessions, the program's outcomes will be evaluated through analysis of changes in body composition and physical fitness, as well as satisfaction surveys, to explore directions for future improvements.
Results from the last summer vacation program showed positive changes, including a 13.5% increase in the rate of strength training practice and a 14.1% increase in vegetable intake among about 40 participating children.
District Mayor Oh Seung-rok said, “We have prepared a customized health promotion program so that children can spend a meaningful and healthy winter vacation,” adding, “I hope children enjoy learning and practicing, acquire proper lifestyle habits, and grow up healthily.”
