The local river low-carbon riverside park contest promoted by Gyeonggi Province is one of the innovative projects in the river sector of the Northern Gyeonggi Grand Renovation Project. It aims to transform river projects, which have so far been implemented mainly for disaster prevention, into spaces centered on people and nature where residents can walk, run, and enjoy themselves.

The ‘Goyang-si Gongneungcheon Low-Carbon Riverside Park Project’ involves connecting bicycle and walking paths in the section between Wondanggyo Bridge on Gongneungcheon and the confluence with Byeokjecheon, and creating facilities such as vegetative retention ponds, small organism habitats, and native plant gardens. The project focuses on creating a space where citizens can leisurely stroll while observing the ecosystem of Gongneungcheon.

In particular, National Road No. 1 (Tongillo), which runs parallel to Gongneungcheon, has a narrow road width (4 lanes total) compared to the traffic volume, making it impossible to reduce lanes to install pedestrian roads. Additionally, the riverside paths have not been connected, causing inconvenience to residents. With this Gongneungcheon project, the riverside paths will be connected, making pedestrian movement easier.

With the selection in the contest, the city will receive 4 billion KRW in provincial funds from Gyeonggi Province and will proceed with the project by securing 1 billion KRW in city funds.

Mayor Lee Dong-hwan of Goyang Special City said, “Securing 4 billion KRW in provincial funds for the Gongneungcheon Low-Carbon Riverside Park Project is a great achievement signaling a successful start in 2025.” He added, “We will do our best to create a river where people can dip their feet in the water, a campaign pledge of the 8th administration, by developing Gongneungcheon into an ecological path where history and nature coexist, a natural resting place full of wind and flowers, and an eco-friendly leisure space linked with National Road No. 1, the Gyeongui Line, and the Sports Park.”

Meanwhile, a total of five locations were selected in this riverside park contest: Goyang-si, Uijeongbu-si, Dongducheon-si, Pocheon-si, and Namyangju-si.
